RAICHUR District:
Raichur fort according to an inscription on a huge stone (42’ x
3’) was built by Gore Gangya Ruddivaru, a minister of Raja of Warangal
in 1284. (This historic inscription is in Parakrit language and is in
praise of the above mentioned minister). These are two forts. The inner
fort as mentioned above was constructed by the above mentioned minister
consisits of huge granite blocks of the length of 12 feet to 30 feet in
length and 3 to 4 feet in width. The entire fort wall is complete in almost
all sides on only seven large stones. These massive blocks are laid on
one another without any cementing material and so nicely and marvelously
joined together that cannot be said to have any parallel in other famous
forts of India. May it be the fort of Dawlatabad, Golkunda or Lal quila
of Delhi. If the pyramids of Egypt can be counted as one of the wonders
of the world, due to massive blocks of stone constructed having a length
of 35 feet, why then this unique fortification of Raichur which has a
length of 42 feet block should fall in oblivion. Alas the preservation
of this historic and unique for tification is neglected and day by day
getting dismantled. During the old Nizam’s days the archeological
department had preserved this, but now there is no safeguard by the present
government. People have no regard to their monumental properties. Very
recently the Petla Burj which was unique in its structure was dismantled
mercilessly. I cannot forget the sorrow expressed by some foreigners who
passed by this dismanteling buruj. But our people have not even felt the
loss.
The other outer fort was constructed by Ibrahim Aadil Shah in about 1549.
The inner fort has two gatemay and the outer three. The fort contains
an old gun over two hundred feet long on the mountain called Punch Bee
Bee Pahad. There is a well built bala hisar and a small mosque on the
top of this mountain. A short distance from the west gate of the inner
fort there exists a strongly built palace which was the official residence
of the Rajas. Now this has been converted into the District Jail, what
an irony of fate and history. Another building worth mentioning is the
Jamia Masjid in the town which was built in 1618 by the Aadil Shah King
(Yusuf Adil Shah). There is a unique caliography in the shape of a rose
depicting the Sura Alnas (Mankind of Quran) on both sides of the main
gate and inside the mosque on the main arch. This has been copied from
the famous Mosque Basra in Turkey.
