Brief History of Lingasagur and Maski Taluk situated in Raichur District

In this taluka there is an old 8th Century fortress on a rock, situated between the two tributaries of Krishna and Jaldurg. From an inscription in the fort it appears that the fort was built by one of the Yadava Rajas of Devalgiri (Daulatabad) about the close of the 12th Century. There is a small waterfall nearby. The famous Historian Meadown Tailor, the renowned author of Confessions of a Thug, Sita, Tipu sultan, History of India of the British period and lastly Noble Queen and who was officiating in this District as Commissioner for a long time, describes the water fall as the most picturesque one. It may be noted that Meadown Tailor accompanied Lord Macaulay during his tour through out India from Darjeling in the North to Nilgiris in the South. According to him this waterfall of Krishna near Jaldurg is unique in its scenary. The last book of this author Noble Queen on which Queen Victoria called him to London and honoured him with the medal Star of India, is based on the historical fiction of Chand Bibi depicting the environment and civilization of Raichur and Jaldurg fort. For some time this fort was the royal prison of the Bijapur Sultan and the revoltors and dignitaries who happened to go against the ruling dynasty were kept here.

There are numerous historic cities in the Taluka, while at Honhalli and wandelli runs of ancient melting factories have been found. Now the present Gold Mines at Hutti about 4 miles from Wandalli is flourishing as having a better quality of Gold in India.

The archeological importance of Maski has been mentioned, but it has also a link with the Ashoken age. In the neighbourhood of the Town under a canopied boulder is carved on Ashoken edict in Brahmi script. The importance of this inscription lies predominantly in its mention of the fort that Ashoka was the author of this edict. I have already described the excavations of Maski and its importance linking to the Neolithic period. During these excavations one more thing came to light. There are signs of gold making inthis part dating back to B.C. period. Hence it was called Maski (Masangi or Suvarnagiri) town of gold. It is only 17 miles from Lingasugur.
