Maliabad Fort in Raichur
The fort in Maliabad, just two and half miles towards south of Raichur
Town is an ancient military structure of the Hindu period, which is now
in dilapidated condition. A pair of elephants carved in red stone is placed
in the fort of a gateway inside the fort. It has a Kannda-Telugu inscription
of the Kakatiya Rajas.
Mudgal Fort in Raichur
The Mudgal fort was a seat of the Yadava governors of Deogiri in 1250.
It came successively into the possession of the Rajas of warangal, the
Bahmani and Bijapur Sultans, and lastly it fell to Aurangzed. There is
a small Roman Catholic colony in the town, whose ancestors were originally
converted by once of St. Francis Xavier’s Missionaries from Goa.
The church was built at on early date and contains a picture of the Madonna.
According to Meadows Tailor the famous historian who was serving as the
Commissioner of this District during the British period of East India,
the church at Mudgal is the oldest church in Deccan. There is a grave
in the church bearing the date 1790.
